Clarence Berry was one of the few Klondike miners who hung on to his fortune. A former California fruit farmer, he followed the lure of gold to Fortymile in 1894, bringing his wife north the next year. He was working in a saloon in Fortymile when he heard of the Klondike gold strike.
Berry obtained a half interest in Antone Stander's rich claim on Eldorado Creek in return for a half interest in his own lesser claim on Bonanza and a grubstake. Eventually, Berry shared ownership of three Eldorado claims with Stander.
